Buried Blackness: Titan 1 Missile Silo Ninja UE Mission

11 March 2010 7 Comments

Blackness.

Blackness so complete it is impossible to tell if it is white or black or blue or green or purple.  Not one photon makes its way to my eye, and my brain screams with lack of optical information.

I make a clicking noise with my tongue and can surmise by the echo we are in a large space; how large it’s hard to tell, but definitely expansive and open.  I can hear the scratching of shoes on metal to my left some distance away.  Something else rustles to my right. It’s cold, the freezing soul chill of being underground crouched in a concrete chamber designed for one purpose:  war.  The utter and complete destruction of life in a far off place without remorse for or connection to those affected.

I push the power switch and light explodes forth bathing the chamber in energy, but somehow the darkness remains… A darkness that says “your joyous positive energy is not welcome here.  My power is complete, and despair is inevitable.”

We leave, making our way through the last rusted tunnel, across the sheet of ice, through the metal grate, and up the muddy hill back to the peace and serenity of a Colorado winter night.

Here are some photos I took while exploring the Titan 1 Missile Silo:

The rest are here.

The thrill of a Night Ninja Urban Exploration Mission coupled with the shear awe and power possessed by such a place shoved me through a door of humanity seldom experienced in my 28 years.

Thanks to two friends Heather and Scott for stepping along the path with me for an evening, for sharing the deepness of the human journey, unchecked by ego, and unfettered by expectations. These two are extraordinary: two of the most peacefully restless people I know.

Half the journey happened before we ever got out of the car. One that we both have been needing to share for awhile.
